TAG Towbars has always been a hands-on kind of company. Born in the late 1970s in a modest brick shed in Slacks Creek, Brisbane, it began as a small fitting shop under founder Phil Barnes, building a few towbars by hand and fitting them straight onto customer vehicles. The very first employee, a 17-year-old named Laurence Day, helped set the tone for what would become a decades-long legacy of hard work, local craftsmanship, and loyalty. 

As the years rolled on, the business passed through families, factories, and generations of tradespeople, each shaping what TAG would become. By the early 2000s, we had moved to manufacturing at scale, and over the next 25 years, steadily expanded our range to meet the evolving needs of Australian drivers. Today, TAG designs and manufactures a comprehensive line up of light duty, heavy duty, extended tray, van step, and Extreme Recovery Towbars — all engineered in-house, tested to meet ADR standards, and built to perform in the toughest conditions Australia can throw at them. We have also created strong partnerships with global industry leading businesses distributing a range of Curt Shock Drop accessories and a huge range of Brink European towbars. We have designed and engineered a massive range of direct fit wiring solutions including universal, vehicle specific, CANbus and sensor extension kits. 

We don’t just make towbars; we engineer every component from the ground up. Using advanced scanning, CAD design, CNC plasma and laser-cutting tools, and full in-house ADR compliance testing, our team ensures each product meets our exacting standards long before it leaves the factory. Powder-coated for longevity and trusted by industry leaders like Repco, TJM, and our nationwide TAG stockist network, our towbars are relied upon by tradies, tourers, and families alike.

At the heart of it all are the people. Some of our team have been with us for decades, passing down skills, refining processes, and taking real pride in what they build.
